Changes to Michigan Work Permits

Beginning October 2, 2026, the process for obtaining work permits for minors in Michigan is changing. Currently, schools issue and revoke work permits. Under Public Act 196 of 2024, that responsibility will move to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).

What families need to know:
• New online system: Minors and employers will use LEO’s free online registration system to apply for and process work permits.
• Ages 14–15: Work is permitted between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. from June 1 through Labor Day and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the year.
• During the school year: Work is limited to 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week.
• When school is not in session: Minors may work up to 40 hours per week.
